Diversity and Inclusion

Unique Perspectives. Powerful Ideas.

At Capital One, we aspire every day to create the best experiences for our associates and our customers. This begins with our commitment to build and foster a diverse and inclusive culture where every voice is heard and matters. We believe that everyone has a unique point of view to share, shaped by their life experiences, cultures, and passions.

We know that to reimagine money – to infuse ingenuity, simplicity, and humanity into banking – we must harness the power of our collective wisdom. Only then can we truly bring our best for our customers and each other.

At Capital One, we are powered by perspective.

A message from Richard D. Fairbank - Founder and CEO:

We started Capital One with a simple principle—attract great talent and give them the opportunity to be great.

Embracing diversity is critical to getting the best talent. We believe our workforce should reflect the communities and customers we serve. Our associates bring a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences to our company. Harnessing the collective wisdom of our people enables us to build a great company and bring breakthrough products and services to our more than 65 million customers. Ensuring that Capital One is a place where all people can thrive also reflects our company’s values: Excellence and Do The Right Thing.

We want to unleash the talents of our more than 40,000 associates to deliver on our mission to bring ingenuity, simplicity and humanity to banking. We embrace a meritocracy of ideas without regard to sex, race, color, age, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, protected veteran, disability or other protected status. We have embedded diversity throughout our talent acquisition, talent management and supplier practices, and our efforts have been recognized. Among many awards, we’re honored to have been named a Top Company for Executive Women and one of the Best Places to Work for LGBT and Disability Inclusion. We’ve also been recognized by the National Minority Supplier Development Council with a Corporation of the Year award for Corporate Excellence in Access to Capital.

I am fortunate to work with the amazing people of Capital One. To a person, they lead with their hearts and elevate those around them. Diversity in all of its forms—diversity of people and diversity of thought—will remain a foundational part of who we are and how we work.

Translate My Skills

The military prepared you for a lot of things—including a thriving career. Veterans and military service members are a valued part of our workforce, not only because of qualities like accountability, collaboration, and leadership, but because of their vast professional abilities.

Use this tool to translate the skills you earned serving in the military–including your specialties and subspecialties–into civilian professional qualifications that match up to open positions here at Capital One.

Support In Service

We recognize that commitments to training and active duty take priority, and we provide a range of benefits to support our associates who continue to serve in the military.

Time Off for Military Training and Active Duty
You may also be eligible for a pay differential between your military and Capital One salaries after you return to work.

On-Leave Job Security
Capital One respects your rights under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act and helps to provide job protection to eligible individuals on leave for uniformed service.

Uninterrupted Benefits During Leave
You have the option to continue medical, dental, vision, and supplemental life coverage and flexible spending accounts while on military leave for active duty. Capital One coverage will be secondary to your military benefit coverage.

Serve the Reserve
This program, run by the Capital One Military Network, provides personal and professional support to Capital One associates and their families during times of military separation. The community offers help with care packages, video teleconferencing, social activities for families, navigating the military organization, news and updates, job placement upon return, and more.

Our Commitment

We respect and value the service of our veterans and their family members, and we are committed to hiring and helping to prepare transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses for new jobs. We participate in national and local partnerships, job fairs, career conferences, and sponsorships, and have an internal network of military employees and veterans.

Newly transitioned military personnel have some unique needs. In order to quickly and successfully bring these skilled employees into Capital One and its culture, we’ve developed the Military New Hire Transition Program. Through a variety of methods, including webinars, live instruction, and one-on-one conversations, it allows us to achieve four goals of:

  • Creating Connections: Building vital interpersonal relationships and information networks among new associates.
  • Understanding Culture: Providing associates with a sense of organizational values and attributes.
  • Providing Clarification: Ensuring that associates understand how things work, their new jobs, and all related expectations.
  • Being Compliant: Fulfilling and adhering to all basic legal and policy-related rules and regulations.

Capital One's Military Associate Network
Veterans, Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses at Capital One come together for mutual support, encouragement, career guidance, associate recruiting, onboarding, reserve support, celebration, and more.

The network has chapters across multiple locations. Associates nationwide give hundreds of hours and significant donations to initiatives like the Honor Flight Network, Patriot Guard, assembling care packages for our troops, Cell Phones for Soldiers, and more.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes Program
We're a proud sponsor of this nationwide effort to help veterans and their spouses find meaningful employment. In addition to sponsoring and attending numerous veteran job fairs, we have also formed a partnership with the Military Spouse Business Alliance (MSBA) to bolster the MSBA through an e-mentoring program in which employees from Capital One and other U.S. Chamber partners will volunteer to mentor military spouses.
