Position Announcement:
Budget Analysts/Coordinators For Activist Labor Union
Location: Washington D.C. Other Locations Considered. Travel Required.
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the nation's fastest growing labor organization representing more than 2.2 million members, seeks Budget Analysts/ Coordinators to work with its Public Services Division or one of its local unions on fiscal analysis to advance the union’s goals in enhancing quality public services and improving working conditions for our public services members.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
· Conduct and interpret financial analysis of state and local governments, and other publicly-funded entities;
· Train other staff in public budget analysis
· Work with elected leadership, bargaining committees and other member committees to inform their strategies with accurate budget information
· Research, track and analyze economic policy that will impact state and local fiscal conditions as well as public services;
· Work with other unions, advocates and political allies to develop common understanding and agenda for improving funding for/efficiency of state and local government services
· Track and vet innovative budget strategies around the country
· Assist in research to develop strategic options to address cuts in public services.
Requirements:
· Graduation from an accredited college or university with a B.A. or B.S. in Public Policy, Economics, Public Administration, or other related degree; Masters degree a plus.
· Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to progressive social change and activist experience.
· Experience preparing or analyzing government budgets. Qualified applicant would have experience critiquing forecasts of proposed revenues, expenditures and fund balances and reviewing Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports (CAFR) to assess the fiscal health of the entity.
· Competence in public fiscal and policy analysis skills; excellent writing and speaking ability; applied experience in public interest issues. Labor background a plus.
· Familiarity with a variety of computer-based research tools, complex financial concepts and good quantitative skills.
· Ability to work well under tight deadlines, in a fast-paced, team environment.
· Travel required.
